Riverside was founded in the early 1870s and is the birthplace of the California citrus industry. Named for its proximty to the Santa Ana river, its Fox Theater was the location of the first showing of the 1939 film, Gone with the Wind.
Riverside is home UC Riverside and UCR Botanical Gardens; featuring 40 acres of interesting plants and walking trails. It is also home to the one surviving Parent Navel Orange Tree, from which all American West Coast navel orange trees are descended.
