Maidstone is the county town of Kent, England, 32 miles south-east of London. The River Medway runs through the centre of the town linking Maidstone to Rochester and the Thames Estuary. Historically, the river was a source and route for much of the town's trade. Maidstone was the centre of the agricultural county of Kent, known as the Garden of England.
Maidstone has a number of theatres, including the Hazlitt Theatre, The River Theatre, The Corn Exchange and the Hermitage Millennium Amphitheatre. The town also boasts numerous wine bars, theme pubs and nightclubs which makes it a popular place to go out in in Kent, while the town’s wide range of live music venues caters for all music tastes.
Recent developments include the former cattle market on the west of the river, which is now a multiplex cinema and nightclub, and the riverside Lockmeadow Centre, which accommodates the same plus restaurants, a bowling alley and a market square.
Winding along the River Medway between Teston & Allington is the Maidstone Millennium River Park, which offers 10km of easily accessible paths passing through Maidstone town centre. Opened in 2001, this beautiful country park was created by the people of Maidstone as part of a special project to mark the new Millennium.
